Theory
 
All living things have spirits. These spirits come out to defend the land and other spirits around them.

Now we have a condition that can cause paralysis and hallucinations, in a conscious person. Hollywood movies provide all the evidence that the human mind is more than capable of imaging/creating some really intense and strange things. This makes sense then that Sleep Paralysis is often mistaken for Paranormal Attacks. A person under sleep paralysis wakes up is unable to move, this alone can cause disorientation. Then add in a hallucination that maybe perceived as a "Ghost" or "Demon" this adds to the belief of it being an attack.

Investigation Steps

Someone who is open minded to paranormal possibilities, can make the mistake of jumping to this as a Paranormal Attack. This could be the person this occurred to, or an investigator. This is the point we need to apply Occam's Razor. The simplest explanation is generally right. In this case if someone believes they have been the victim of a Paranormal Attack, as an investigator it is our job to look at the entire possibilities, and operate under a scientific approach. I am recommending the following steps.

1. Determine what the individual was doing the 24 hours prior to the incident. In particular I look for the possibility of an individual having taken a drug or hallucinogenic compound.
2. Determine if any chance of a "Data Rape" drug was possibly given to the individual, in particular if the person is a woman. There is a chance of a false memory due to the unconscious mind suppressing a negative memory.
3. Break-in scenario, check the windows/doors to determine if there was any chance of a break-in, that the intruder could have used a gas or other form of a drug the person. Various forms of anesthesia have been known to leave a person conscious but unable to move.
4. Now we examine Sleep Paralysis. Unless you are a licensed Sleep Specialist, or Doctor, we can not diagnose Sleep Paralysis. The individual should always be recommended to discuss if they have "Sleep Paralysis" with their doctor. Now their are things we can do to show them there is a greater likely hood this is the cause.
   1. If attacks are happening regularly, then plan an investigation of this person's sleep. An infrared video camcorder taping the room where the person sleeps and a voice recorder place near the individual at night. If your successful in capturing an attack on video.
      1. Is the individual awake? or could it be a nightmare?
      2. Where any EVP's captured around the time of the attack?
      3. Any manifestations in the video?
      4. Any abnormalities appear in the audio or video recordings?
   2. A sleep diary, documenting when "attacks" occur, the details of the attack. Recording their daily activities, and stress level before going to bed nightly.
   3. Finally they need to see a Sleep Specialist or their doctor to rule out Sleep Paralysis.
5. Mental Illness, touchy subject but it is something we need to rule out.
   1. Take a family history do they have anyone in their family that has been diagnosed with a mental illness?
   2. Anyone in the immediate family a victim of abuse? It may be possible that the individual has suppressed a memory from early childhood.
6. Electromagnetic Sensitivity? Conduct a complete EMF sweep of the room the attack occurred in for any strong EMFs. If the person is sensitive to EMF this could be the cause.
7. If Sleep Paralysis has been ruled out, drug/date rape drugs have been ruled out, and mental illness then we can begin looking closer at this as a Paranormal Attack.

• Action may not coincide with current environment. Apparition passing through where a door once stood.

Theory
 
The theory here is that the action built up a psychic energy in the area over time from a repetitive action, or from a single traumatic event. This psychic energy is then released under certain conditions to make the action visible. No “Spirit” or “Ghost” is believed to be controlling or driving this action.

• Lack of communication
• Activity seen as harassment
• Activity is always seen as “Angry”
• Activity only occurs if a certain individual is present.

Theory

1. A malevolent non-human spirit that has latched onto a particular individual that is emotionally or mentally disturbed. The intent is often to cause harm to that individual and/or others around that individual.
2. An emotionally or mentally disturbed person with latent psychokinesis abilities, that manifests as mischievous pranks. Often this individual is not aware they are the cause of these pranks or that they have this psychokinesis ability.

• Interacts with the environment or people present.
• Capable of manipulating lightweight items.
• Auditory responses can change.
• Presence is not isolated to single area.
• Interactions are not repetitive.

Theory
 
These are spirits of humans who have passed away, but have not crossed over to the other side. Reasons for this include the following:

• Fear of judgment
• Died suddenly and do not know they are dead.
• Emotionally bound to a person or item.
• Unfinished business
• Traumatic event
• Waiting for justice to be served

• Hostile Interactions with the environment and people.
• Changes in mood, from angry to flattering.
• Attempts at coercion to get you to perform deeds.

Theory
 
These are intelligent spirits from another plane, that are trying to cross over into the plane of the living. These spirits thrive on mayhem and anarchy. They often latch on to emotional stress. Certain emotional barriers may block them such as strong religious belief in good, or strong mental blocks of the mind.

Many investigators believe a reading in the 2.0 to 7.0 milligauss range is paranormal activity. This is just a belief and I recommend looking for:

• Any elevated EMF reading with no explainable cause.
• A fluctuating reading that has no reason for the change.
• I recommend the follow procedure at an investigation site.

The key point to using EMF readings as evidence is to eliminate any man-made reasons for the reading, and to pinpoint the spot where the reading is emanating from. Check and recheck the spot over time watching for fluctuations. This then helps make it hard evidence.

Scanning

To use an EMF Detector start by moving the EMF left to right over the area you are scanning, then moving to an up to down pattern. Your movement should be gentle even pattern. Sudden jerks or moving to fast can cause a false reading.

Usage

1. Turn off all electrical appliances in the area to be scanned, or as many as you can. Some appliances may not be able to be turned off
2. Scan the area, away from any electrical devices you should see a reading in the 0.1 to 0.5 milligauss range. This is natural background EMF readings you will find just about anywhere.
3. If you have a reading above 0.5 milligauss, then you need to determine if it caused by a man made field.
4. Map out any unexplained EMF readings in the area. Check these routinely over the course of the investigation.

Here are things that can explain EMF readings that are not obvious.

Explainable Causes

• Electrical appliance behind the wall. Heaters & microwaves generate a field over a large area that can extend through walls.
• Unshielded wiring in the wall. This can usually be determined by the readings will be found in a straight line, the same path where the wiring is laid.
• Ungrounded plumbing or gas lines. Any copper or iron pipe running through walls that is not properly grounded can generate an EMF field. This one can fluctuate.
• Telephone wires, cable lines, door bell wires and others, are often not shielded, and can generate EMF’s. Look for evidences of these kinds of lines.

The term dowsing is an old practice used to locate underground water or graves. I first learned this at a Trimble County Historical Society meeting where it was demonstrated on how to locate graves. How it works or why is unknown. Most scientists don’t take it seriously but there surely must be a scientific exclamation. Some say it has to do with minerals in the ground or gases of decayed bodies but it works on living people as well.

Who can do dowsing?

Most people can do it but there are a few who cannot. About 90% of the people can do it with success. I have conducted many of these experiments with great success at locating graves. Some say dowsing is practicing witchcraft. However I don’t think that 90% of the people who are doing it are witches or that it requires special powers. They used to call dowsing for water for a spring or well, “water witching”. I believe it has to do with some type of magnetic field given off our bodies that remain even after death.

What does dowsing tell you?

It has always been a problem to locate un-marked graves. However this will not tell you the name of the person in the grave. It can tell you if it is a male or a female if you know where the head is located in the grave. So it is important to first practice doing it on graves in a cemetery were you know where the head is located. You can learn if it is a infant, a young child, an adult and even the difference from very tall to very short. Sometimes you might know that great-great- grandpa is buried in this grave but you don’t know anything about his height. Was he very tall like your uncle or short like grandfather? For this you can get some answers.

How do you make dowsing rods?

Take two metal coat hangers. Cut them at the neck before the point where they join to form the hook for the hanger. Straighten each of the hangers to get all the bends out as much as possible. Now make a 90-degree bend for the handles. Making the handle about 3 to 4 inches long. They take all of a few minutes to make.

How do you use dowsing rods?

Hold the rods in your hands lightly, letting them sort of lay on your fingers so that you will not be in control of their movements. Keep your thumbs above the bend of the handle so not to restrict the movement. Put your elbows at your waist and forearm parallel to the ground and parallel to each other. Now begin walking over a gravesite. If a body is present the rods will cross in front of you, and then when you pass over the grave it will then open back up. Once you have learned how to do it then it is most important to practice it until you really feel comfortable at what you are doing. It is a must to do it in a cemetery with marked graves.

How do you tell the age and height of the person in the grave?

Now once you know where a grave is located you can go from the headstone, then move straight down the body until the rods start to open up. Now measure the height of the person. 1 or 2 steps will be a infant. 2 to 3 will mostly be a toddler, 3 to 4 a young child, then 5 might be a short person and once you get to 7 you are looking at a tall person. All this depends on the size of footsteps. However I would recommend using a tape measure. We might get excited and make bigger steps than usually or have a larger foot than another person.

How do you tell what gender?

There is more than one way of doing this. However this is the only way I have found that seems to work most every known time. I say that because you must practice on known graves first. Using only one of your Dowsing rods stand on the left side of the body (left side of the person who is buried) with one rod across the body. If it is a male it will turn and swing to the feet. Again here you must know where the head is located. If the rod does nothing then it is not a male. If you cross over to the right side of the body and it swings to the head then you know it is a female.

Any additional tips?

Christian graves are usually laid out in west/east direction. So if you walk in a north/south direction you will pick up on the graves. Most graves are two to three feet apart. As you cross each grave the rods will cross and open over each grave. Next is to get the perimeters of the cemetery, by walking over the rows and determining the number of graves and number of rows. If this is small family cemetery then it is best to have some little flags to mark each grave and corner of the cemetery.

This method works on living people, as well as animals that have died in the field or a buried pet.
